NIGERIA’S SUPER FALCONS STUN HOSTS MOROCCO IN SUPERB COMEBACK, WIN 10TH WAFCON TITLE

Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Saturday night, produced a sensational second-half comeback to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 and win a record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.

The Atlas Lionesses of Morocco was in a 2-0 lead as at half time in the match played Olympic Stadium in Rabat. Their goals came through Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy.

Way into the second half, Esther Okoronkwo brought hope back to the Super Falcons when she scored from the penalty spot in the 64th minute after Nouhaila Benzina handled Folamide Ijamilusi’s cross.

Folamide Ijamilusi netted in the 71st minute, to bring scores to 2-2. It was substitute Jennifer Echegini who scored the winner with two minutes of the game remaining.

With the victory, Nigeria reclaimed the title they won last in 2016. They also set the record of winning all the final 10 games they have appeared in since the WAFCON was instituted.

Apart from the one million dollars winning prize, Nigeria also won the newly built trophy which was launched few days before the commencement of the tournament.
